How to Use Behavior Stacking to Create a Morning Routine
May 03, 2023Do you struggle to establish a consistent morning routine? Do you often find yourself rushing out the door, feeling frazzled and unprepared for the day ahead? If so, consider using behavior stacking to create a morning routine that prepares you for success.
Behavior stacking is a simple but effective technique that involves pairing a new behavior you want to establish with an existing behavior you already do consistently. By doing so, you can leverage the power of habit to create a more structured and productive morning routine. Here's how to get started:
Step 1: Identify Your Existing Behaviors
The first step in using behavior stacking to create a morning routine is to identify the behaviors you already do consistently. These include getting out of bed, brushing teeth, showering, or making coffee.
Step 2: Determine Your Desired Behaviors
Next, consider the new behaviors you want to add to your morning routine. These include things like meditating, exercising, journaling, or reading.
Step 3: Create Your Behavior Stack
Once you've identified your existing and desired behaviors, it's time to create your behavior stack. Start by choosing one of your existing behaviors as the anchor for your new routine. This will be the behavior you stack your new behaviors onto. For example, if you always brush your teeth when you wake up, you might choose this as your anchor behavior.
Next, decide on the order in which you want to stack your new behaviors. For example, you can meditate for five minutes immediately after brushing your teeth, do some light stretching, and make a cup of coffee. The key is to choose a logical and consistent order to stick to daily.
